1. The candidate must be fluent in your language. They must have good command of the language. Understand different styles, different accents, have a very extensive vocabulary. Why is this important? There are situations that words alone cannot address. Let me give an example. In some cultures when someone is in a position of authority he or she is never questioned. If you are a medical doctor, a teacher, a lawyer… and are working with a client from a culture like that, whatever you say goes. Because the client puts their full confidence in you. They know that you have their best interests in mind. If their medical doctor thinks that they should eat grass to improve their health that is what they will do. If he/she asks them to make a decision about their health they will bring it back to him/her saying that he/she is the professional, he/she should tell them what to do. Sometimes this back and forth can result in an impasse where the professional and his/her client cannot move forward. In this type of situation the interpreter plays a vital role whereby he/she is able to show each side where the other is coming from. If he/she is successful at bringing both parties to see things from each other’s perspective then they will resolve the issue easily and avoid any unnecessary tensions.
